Here ye, here ye! World’s best town criers to descend on Welsh town

UK

A Welsh town is “so excited” as town criers from across the world are set to descend for an international competition.

Montgomery in Powys will host the annual Guild of Town Criers Championship this year.

The event takes place on 17 September and will see town criers pitted against each other to win a silver cup.

Sue Blower is Montgomery’s town crier and is tasked with organising this year’s event.

She told Sky News the best part of the job was “meeting people”.

“It’s really just having that gesture of friendship and community spirit and welcoming people,” she said.

“It’s a lovely position to hold, which is why I’ve still got it after 20 odd years. I was born here so I’ve got a lot of local knowledge, I know everybody.

“I know who lives in every house in the town and that’s obviously a great asset to have.”

About 40 criers are expected to attend the “colourful” event.

“It’s certainly unique for here and Montgomery people are so excited because I’ve been promoting it since the New Year really,” she added.

Ms Blower said many people commented on the aptness of her name for the role she undertakes.

“I can assure you, many people comment on that,” she said.

“Quite a foghorn of a voice, but it was just very magical that I got the appointment.”

She won the role after an Opportunity Knocks-style contest more than 20 years ago in front of about 200 people.

“The funny thing was, I was related to most of them. So if I hadn’t been selected for that competition, I’d have been very miffed,” Ms Blower added.
