Police borrow kayaks after drink-driver gets stuck in floodwater

UK

Police borrowed a pair of kayaks after a drink-driver got stuck in floodwater in West Sussex.

Officers waded knee deep to perform a breath test on James Doyle after he misjudged the road in Bognor Regis on 15 November last year.

The 57-year-old was arrested for being three times over the limit.

Locals then gave police kayaks so they could return to check the car, with a body-worn camera showing them paddling back to the hatchback on North Bersted Street.

One of the PCs is seen standing on the kayak and using it as a platform to get inside the car.

Sussex Police said it was “all in a day’s work” for the officers involved.

Doyle, of Fir Tree Way in Bognor, admitted being over the limit when he appeared in court and on Monday was given an eight-week suspended prison sentence.

He was also banned from driving for 29 months and told to pay £239.
